# What "In Vitro Research Purposes Only" Actually Means

“In vitro research purposes only” means the material is supplied as a laboratory chemical, not a medicine, a food, a cosmetic or a supplement. This guide explains what that means when you buy, who may buy, what responsibility passes to you on delivery, the basics of handling it safely, and which questions we will not answer.

## What Does “In Vitro Research Purposes Only” Mean?

“In vitro research purposes only” means the material is supplied as a laboratory chemical for work in glassware and cell culture. It is not a medicine, a food, a cosmetic or a supplement, and it carries no claims about what it does.

Three things follow from that, and they lead into each other:

- **It is tested as a chemical, not as a medicine.** A batch is checked for what it is and how pure it is. It is not checked for sterility or for contamination that could cause a reaction — the things a material meant for a living subject would have to prove. - **It carries no claims.** We do not say a product is safe or effective for any purpose. Not out of caution about wording — there is no evidence that would support such a statement, and producing that evidence is what the whole medicines-approval process exists to do.
- **It sits outside every consumer category.** Drugs, foods, cosmetics and supplements are each defined categories with their own rules. Research materials are in none of them, which is exactly why the restriction on use is not decoration.

## Who Can Buy Research Peptides?

## What Does the Buyer Take On?

Responsibility for the material passes to the buyer on delivery, along with the ordinary obligations of laboratory practice:

## What Does Safe Handling Involve?

Safe handling of research peptides is simpler than people expect: gloves and eye protection, one compound open at a time, labelled containers, and proper disposal. What follows is general good practice, not a protocol, and your institution’s own procedures come first where they exist.

None of that is a regulatory standard, and this page is not the place to look for one. The handling, storage and record rules on this page are Australian Research Peptides’ own supply policy together with ordinary laboratory practice, and they are stated as such.

Where a workplace standard does apply, Safe Work Australia publishes it. Its [model Code of Practice on managing risks of hazardous chemicals in the workplace](https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/doc/model-code-practice-managing-risks-hazardous-chemicals-workplace) covers identifying the hazard, personal protective equipment, storage, labelling and chemical registers. A model code is guidance until a state or territory adopts it, so Safe Work Australia’s own advice is to check with the work health and safety regulator where you are.

### Gloves, Eye Protection and a Clean Bench

The baseline is modest: disposable gloves, eye protection where anything could splash, and a clean surface kept for the task. Gloves work in both directions — they keep the chemical off your skin, and they keep skin oils and microbes off the material.

Treat anything without a safety profile conservatively. Avoid skin contact, avoid breathing in dry powder, and work away from food, drink and anything that leaves the laboratory.

### Keeping Compounds Apart

Cross-contamination is the failure that ruins research quietly. It is invisible when it happens and expensive when it is discovered, and the defences are habits rather than equipment:

- one compound open at a time
- fresh disposable equipment for each material, nothing shared
- surfaces cleaned between tasks
- vials resealed straight away rather than left open

A contaminated batch does not announce itself. It just produces results nobody can reproduce.

### Labels and Records

The rule is blunt: if it is not written down, it did not happen. Label every container with the compound, the strength and the date. Keep a record of where material is held and under what conditions, and make sure every vial can be traced back to its certificate. ### Disposal

Disposal is part of handling, not an afterthought. Sharps go in a proper sharps container, never household waste. Chemical waste and expired material follow your laboratory’s procedures. If your work sits inside an institution, its rules take precedence over anything here.

The container is specified rather than improvised. WorkSafe ACT’s safety alert on [disposal of clinical waste, sharps and needles](https://www.worksafe.act.gov.au/health-and-safety-portal/safety-alerts/disposal-of-clinical-waste-sharps-and-needles) states that hypodermic needles are clinical waste, that an approved sharps bin meeting Australian Standards AS 4031 and AS 4261 should be used to collect them, and that disposing of them negligently into a general waste stream is an offence in that territory.

Waste and clinical-waste law is made by each state and territory, so the rule that binds you is the one where you are, not the one quoted above. If your work sits inside an institution, its waste route settles the question already. ## What Is Not Permitted?

Material must not be given to, or consumed by, humans or animals. That covers any use in a living subject, whether human or veterinary, whoever is doing it and wherever.

It is also not for diagnostic use, not for use in food or cosmetics, and not for resale as anything other than what it is.

These are not caveats we hope nobody reads. They are the conditions on which the material is supplied at all.

## Why Will You Not Answer Some Questions?

Australian Research Peptides declines every request for dosing information, administration protocols, and comparisons framed around effects in a living subject. That applies consistently and without exception.

The reason is not evasiveness. Answering would turn a research chemical into something presented as fit to be administered — which would be untrue, and would misrepresent what was actually tested. It would also be a claim about a product for which no honest claim of that kind can be made.

## What Comes With a Batch?

A certificate of analysis records what was tested, by what method, on what date, with what result. Published certificates are in the [CoA library](https://www.australianresearchpeptides.au/coa), indexed by stock code, and the library lists every product and strength — so it also shows which certificates are still coming.

That document is the link between what you were sold and what you are working with. Carry the stock code into your own records and the connection survives the vial going into a freezer.
